Nomso (Chuck) is a 25-year-old self learned Designer based in Cape Town. AKA Chuqban, he is the brain behind Graphic Design Deals. We had an opportunity to chat with Nomso and ask him a few questions, this is how it went:

HJ:      When and what made you pursue digital arts?

Nomso: Well, the real question is when I started Arts in general. Growing up I have always been told that I can try out the creative industry, unfortunately I had other ambitions. In 2013 I applied to study my live long dream course, IT. Things didn’t pan out as planned, and I ended up enrolling for Public Relations Management.  Which turned out to be one of the deeply rooted causes of depression in 2014. In mid-2014, I was in dire need of expressionism during my therapy phase.

With the influence of a friend who inspired me to try out an abstract approach to art, by following his advice I experienced a vast improvement in my mental state. I continued the abstract approach till the end of the year, till when I experienced my first block in early 2015.

In March 2015 I had to look for a way out of the block. I started drawing characters from pictures, this proved almost impossible and having started only in my early 20s, my confidence was at literally zero. But by pushing through that year I decided to get a graphic tablet in February 2016 after seeing a design student use one and I did every enquiry about it. That is how I started digital illustration.

HJ:      Do you have any other interests besides Digital Arts?

Nomso: Of course, I love computers and I still self-practice Programming and I won’t give up graphic design all together. I also love music, I self-learnt how to play a guitar in 2016 and I love free styling rap, I’m that spur kind of the moment kind of guy.

HJ:      If you were not doing Design what else could you have done?

Nomso: Lol, I would most definitely be a software programmer, or most unlikely a music artist.

HJ:      Who or what inspires you as a person?

Nomso: Who?…. Hmmmmmmm…. That has always been something I struggled with. However, growing up (at the age 17) I stumbled upon someone everyone around me despised, whom I grew to respect. I never wanted to be him but I loved his perception. He is the renowned artist Leonardo Da Vinci of Italy. I was not drawn to him because of his arts achievement. I just loved his outlook and philosophy of life.

HJ:      When did you start The Chuqban and what inspired it?

Nomso: I actually started adapting the name “Chuqban” to my work in 2016. I choose the name as an act of gratitude to my friend’s advice to try out arts. “Chu” is from my name “Q” is the nick name I called my friend and “Ban” is our way of acknowledging someone in our circle of friends. I decided to keep the name because of the influence the people around me had in my life.

HJ:      What/who is Chuqban to you? What is your best description of it?

Nomso: Chuqban although it might appear to be just a name. It is a pledge to always keep discovering, “Now is never too late” even though I started at a time I would consider late, I will have to push through to unwrap what life has given me. And given that the skill was born from a family of friends.

HJ:      We haven’t seen you showing your pieces at various Art shows, do you have plans to?

Nomso: well, I did actually once in 2015 at a conference where I was invited to display. Since I had nothing like others to show. I used that opportunity to display my mind bugging pieces.

HJ:      Lastly, where can people contact you if they are interested in one of art?

Nomso: To reach me, you can find me of Facebook and Instagram.
