Basetsana Koloi who is known by her peers as Base is a 23-year-old creative, Gqom DJ,  Sneaker Connoisseur and Self-Acclaimed Photographe from Carletonville who is currently based in Joburg. The Carletonville native moved to Jozi to pursue her studies but found herself meeting amazing people who would inspire her to build and grow her own brand. Her arsenal includes doing campaigns for brands like Styla Gang, DEAD and Addidas Originals to name a few. We had an opportunity to sit down with Base and this is how it went:

H.J                  : When did you start developing an interest for the creative industry and what inspired that interest?

Base              : I do believe that we’re all creative in our own unique, sometimes very overwhelming way, so I didn’t really develop an interest for anything I just groomed mine and attained knowledge on a daily through the people I was meeting and being introduced to.

H.J                  : At such an early age you have worked with some of the biggest brands out there, what do you attribute your success to?

Base              : I don’t think I’ve actually reached the pinnacle that I call success but I’m hella thankful to my peers because they honestly teach me the most!

H.J                  : Who or what inspires your style?

Base              : What inspires my style is everyday people who are able to execute their style in a way that makes me want to own whatever they’ve got on.

H.J                  : You’ve been featured by some of SA’s most prominent creatives, what  does it feel like and do you see yourself as a local style icon? If not then then why not?

Base              : Uuuhm it doesn’t really feel any type of way to work with creatives, I just value the knowledge they share in those moments and the advice they give. They’re just amazing humans. I don’t know about being a local style icon yet, because I know the boundaries I can push in terms of fashion and I haven’t really done that yet. But I clean up nice ?

H.J                  : What would you say is your biggest achievement so far?

Base              : My biggest achievement is legit having the strength to stay in school. It’s the consumer of most of my time so it can get a bit too much to a point where I can make time for other things I’d like to get done

H.J                  : Who, in your opinion (besides yourself) is currently breaking boundaries in the creative scene and why do you say so?

Base              : Im a huge fan of Thabang Rabothata of DEAD. The work that he’s put out is global. Lulama Wolf is also just doing the ultimate most as a documenter, she’s the plug! Lindi_XO is another youngin to look out for, I’m inspired by her heart and her eye. Her work stays clean.

H.J                  : You’ve have worked with some of the most brilliant creatives, who would you still like to work with and why?

Base              : I’d love to work with everybody again but now I need to allow the opportunity of working with people I haven’t worked with yet.

H.J                  :  What are some of your personal goals and ambitions?

Base              : Maningi! I’ve got so much that I’d like to get done by the end of the year but the focus now is to just perfect my DJing in time for summer.

H.J                  : Finally, for a Hustler’s Junction exclusive, is there anything new that you’re working on that you would like people to keep an ear on the ground for?

Base              : I’ve got a whole lot of shandis that I’m cooking up and I’m all about the energies so I don’t wanna jinx anything but keep an eye peeled for my brothers at StylaGang.
